Tim Xeriland is Okay!

You may have heard of terrible tornados that touched down creating havoc in Texas in the past few days. One of our first hybrid cohort members was exactly there. I am much relief to report that Tim Xeriland is okay.

Check out the photo he took as the tornado was following him in his car: Tim Xeriland's picture of the tornado

Technology Blurring Boundaries

Sometimes ideas don’t sink in just because I am aware of them. It takes a new experience or a different setting to help me gain a deeper appreciation of them. That was the case for me over the last two weeks when I was teaching in Manila, The Philippines.

The idea is this:

Technology blurs the boundaries between peoples, cultures, and countries.

Two key experiences made this idea more real to me. The first was watching people with a variety of…

Have you checked out the EPET Student Research Group?

The EPET Student Research Group has been meeting every other Wednesday here on campus. As always, we are happy to Skype in any hybrid friends. Recognizing that not everyone can attend the synchronous sessions, however, we are trying to leverage the technology to let folks know what we discuss and keep an archive of links, tools, and ideas that come up in our sessions.

For agendas and all of our resources, including notes from the meetings:…

Woah... I need more fiber in my writing diet.

Sorry for the title, but I can't help but feel a bit "bound-up", so to speak, in terms of my written voice. If you look at my next most recent post, it's been a few months since I've posted anything. Punya Mishra, my doctoral advisor (see http://epetphd.ning.com/), has suggested on numerous occasions to blog daily for a period of time until you feel that "regularity" that we all desire. His own web…

Today marks the beginning of the Spring term. With snow on the ground here in East Lansing, let's hope that Spring comes soon. In any case, classes begin today, and for the EPET hybrid cohort, that means the start to CEP 933 - Quantitative Methods in Research Methods II. Dr. Kim Maier has created the first-ever online version of this course packed with engaging lectures, homework assignments, and activities sure to help students develop their  educational research skills.

Best of luck…

Happy New Year!!

Dear friends --

This year, as in the past couple of years, the entire family joins in to create a video new year's greeting. These videos are created in our basement with whatever tools and things we have lying around, or we can easily drum up.

Take a look at "The Power of the Shadow"…

buying stats text and other texts

I just bought our stats text for next semester for $17 (including shipping) on half.com, and Robin D. suggested I should share that site with you all (www.half.com) just in case you're looking for a used option for buying texts.

You also might be interested to know that Robin suggested it'd be fine to have the older version (half.com also carries the newer edition, but it's $100).

Skype screencast

Hi everyone! Does anyone know how to do a screencast in Skype? It seems like the Skype menu differs between Mac and PCs. My husband wants to do one on a PC at work (he's an educator) so I thought I would ask the technology experts.

Here is another cool thing I wanted to tell you about....an 8th grade computer teacher in Clio has developed a sort of hybrid course where students learn completely online, but they are in the classroom with the teacher. The teacher figures that…
