A Short Bio (kinda short?)

I was so excited to find the TPACK graphic as it has provided a basis for communication in terms of many layers of my experience, and I can't wait to learn more. I am currently the Instructional Designer at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, living on a cherry farm with a view of both bays that I rent. It is a great spot to raise my 3 kids as a single mom (7th, 5th, 3rd grades) as there is so much to do here. This environment, my great boss, and the hybrid program made possible for me to go ahead with a PhD that I've wanted for a long time. Previous to this, I taught Curriculum Theory and Creativity at Western Michigan, and my favorite people there graduated from MSU. I've also spent over 10 years consulting in Arts Education, Curriculum and Assessment with the NC A+ Schools Program.
As an inner-city classroom teacher in NC prior that, I think I taught with the edupunk spirit before tech existed in K-12 schools. The 'tech' part of the TPACK becoming explicit is the part that is new to me in many ways as I've never done anything formal with it until recently. I grew up with engineers and using technology, including doing PR for engineering technology after I graduated from U-M, and never really thought about the fact that most people don't think this way. I cannot wait to be involved with people who not only do think this way, but also believe and have the resources and desire to figure out how to teach others to think this way. And am very lucky that my kids are actually excited to support their geeky mom.

iPads in Virginia Classrooms

Interesting article from Roanoke.Related to last week's lecture, the reading Overused and my own experiences balancing home and work technology with three kids and their school technology, I do wonder about how we evaluate short term ROI vs. long-term ROI with every tech/time investment.

Tracy,

You've been working hard. Why not relax and have some "popcorn" with the chef:

Hi Tracey,
The Chinese programs at the schools are run by the Confucius Institute at MSU, but I am only a part of this game project. That being said, if they at any point use the game, then the answer would be yes :)

If MCC has anything like that, I've never noticed it. Like you pointed out, it makes a big difference if you're there during the day or not. When I taught F2F classes, it was always at night. Now I only teach online and laugh because my department admin assistant will FedEx me the fliers that go to my mailbox once a semester or so. MCC has a Center for Teaching and Learning that makes an effort to pull in adjuncts, but I think that faculty turnover has prevented much of an attachment from starting. I think I'm also guilty of not doing a good enough job of making myself feel connected; I've been working more than full time since I started there and haven't made it a priority. I think I'm not alone in that - most adjuncts (especially those who teach online or only at night) have other "day jobs" and it's hard to think about engagement as one more thing to do.

Hi Tracy! I agree - Most days, I actually don't mind the commute. Because I go with my coworker, a lot of times we'll do some of our greatest brainstorming or problem solving on the commute. We will also take turns sending certain emails out on our BlackBerries (whomever isn't driving, that is!). When I drive by myself (which is pretty rarely), I love to turn up whatever music I'm feeling that day and have some "me" time. I'm a music junkie and a musician at heart. :) I've not met Maria, though I think that I must have probably seen her name over my email before. Sadly, I don't know a lot of people there since I haven't been to the campus of MCC in over three years since I started teaching online. Adjuncting is a tricky gig - do you find as an instructional degsigner that your adjuncts aren't as connected to the institution as the full time instructors?

re: your question about a storyboard for the podcasts...

This is our first foray into video podcasting (there are 4 of us working on the project, each responsible for 2 podcasts. We're all new initiates). We don't have something like a storyboard.

The closest thing we have is a template. There is a 30-second-or-so intro, which is fairly uniform across topics, introducing the topic and the process of completing the lesson (watch the intro video, complete some exercise(s), watch a video explaining the "answers" to the exercises and what they mean). The first 30 seconds we have the camera on the presenter. For most of the rest of the podcast (typically 8-20min), the video is of the computer screen (usually a powerpoint with some animation to let the viewer know what part we're talking about). They aren't created yet, but I'm imagining using my tablet's functionality so that I can circle/underline things on the powerpoint slides).

Is this what you meant by storyboard?

Hi Tracy: I have family in the TC area: in Sutton's Bay. My family has cherry farms and also have the Horizon Bookstore downtown. That's my favorite place in the world! My whole family is there. I look forward to meeting you in June! And maybe seeing you at the Cherry Festival :)

No, I don't ride myself; my husband and I went out to the Grand Canyon and back on an old Yamaha 850 once, though, back in our young days. Thank goodness for the sheepskin. ;-) I also love outdoor stuff but I stick to the non-motorized type mostly--cycling, running, skiing, hiking.
